Learning to use a paint roller?
Preparing to paint
Before being able to apply technical skills, you must be fully prepared to complete your jobs without flaw. There are 3 steps to this process;
- Remove all obstructions, ensure proper floor protection is set up and clean walls prior to painting..
- Ensure you have all the equipment you need;
- Primer (If needed)
- Paint roller
- Paint Tray/bucket
- Paint
- Brush for cutting
- Masking tape
- Correctly clean tools such as your paint roller to ensure there are no particles that may cause markings or bubbles.
- To clean your paint roller, use a lint remover and lightly dampen it to improve the smoothness of paint application.
Painting Process
Now the process of using the paint roller has begun:
- Complete cutting in edges.
- Dip the nap of the paint roller into the paint (do not submerge the roller)
- Begin rolling from the lower corner of a wall, remember to leave a few inches distance from the edges.
- Roll the paint in diagonal up-down motions, segment the paint job into 3-4 foot parts.
- Reload the roller with more paint and move on to the next section.
- Ensure that sections are connected by an overlap to avoid uneven paint layers.
- Wait for the first coat to dry and if necessary apply a second coat. (Different paints require differing amounts of time in order to dry, e.g. oil paint takes up to 24 hours compared to latex paint taking around 4 hours to dry.
- Clean your equipment – Scrape paint off of paint roller, hose it down with water along as well as washing the paint tray and other dirtied equipment.
